The “Escuela de Ingenieros de Bilbao” (Faculty of Engineering)  was the second Higher Education Centre in th town and its foundation was promoted by the Town Hall, the provincial Government, as well as by several technicians and businessmen.

The aim of the University of the Basque Country, through the Directorate for Enterprise, is to establish a fluid stream of contact and information between the academic world and the various sectors of our economy.

Today it is impossible to conceive of a business project without a strategic line aimed at innovation. And innovation, largely passes enjoy the fruits that provides research at the highest level.

The group’s activity focuses on the area of optical communications, especially based on plastic optical fiber applications, although to a lesser extent also works with conventional fiber, especially multimode. They also work in other areas of applied photonics in the visible and infrared, based on the development of sensors with applications in sectors as diverse as aeronautics, automotive and telecommunications.

Lines of investigation

The group operates in the field of the following lines of research:

– Analysis and optimization of links based on plastic optical fiber and application to local area networks.
It is a line sizing links based on plastic optical fiber. These links are low cost and small lengths of lying (less than 500 m.). An important application is the the local area networks.

– Optical communications
Study of systems and components for fiber optics.

– Development of new passive and active devices for plastic optical fiber.
This is the design of active and passive components such as couplers, modulators, switches, etc., for plastic optical fiber.

– Theoretical and practical study of propagation models.
Our group also performs theoretical models of propagation in multimode fibers, based on the technique of ray tracing.

– Applied photonics
Design of optical systems for the determination of physical and chemical parameters in industrial processes.

– Lighting
Our group has also done design of lighting systems based on fiber optics.

– Sensors
This line deals With the design and development of fiber-based, low-cost sensors. Its application in principle is open to any type of industry, being the MOST Demanded by the automotive industry, white lines, aerona.
