The laser systems field is varied due to the large number of lasers with different characteristics and applications.
Currently, storage and optical communications use approximately 50% of lasers in the world.
The second area of application is to transform a wide range of materials by cutting, welding, marking and coding. Currently, new fiber lasers are being developed with a lower cost. Also, ultrafast lasers are arriving to the industry. This expands the amount of materials that can be used as the laser was mainly restricted to metallic materials.
Another area of specialization is the medical application lasers surgery where lasers are increasingly used for a growing variety of surgical procedures.
Lasers are also present in instrumentation used to selectively illuminate a sample, whose reflection can be measured to provide information on the content of the sample, often combined with photonic sensors as described in the first paragraph.
Lasers also have a key role in the printing industry. Not only on laser printers but also in the dynamic production of electronic boards. They are also beginning to play a role in printing plastic electronics, which reduces the cost of production of basic electronic devices such as flexible electronic books, smart packaging, etc.
Finally, they are also being considered for defense applications such as directed energy weapons or accurate surveillance systems amongst others.
