The most immediate impact of photonics technology in power is the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. Photovoltaic cells, that join to form photovoltaic panels, convert sunlight into electricity, helping to leverage the major source of energy available to us, the sun, into usable electricity.
The photovoltaic power generation is still much more expensive than traditional sources based on fossil fuels or nuclear technology. However, they are developing new technologies that offer the potential for greater efficiency, such as: cell polycrystalline silicon (poly crystalline silicon PV) cells, thin layer (thin film PV), solar cells and concentrators tinted. The use of these energy systems is increasing significantly and still is one of the fastest growing areas in the field of photonics.
