STEM Photonics is dedicated to the research, manufacture and commercialization of high-precision polarimetry equipment with industrial applications for pharmaceuticals, fragrances, beverages, chemicals and materials engineering. A polarimeter is a scientific instrument used to measure the rotation angle of light’s polarization when it passes through an optically active substance. Very accurate metrology needed for pharmaceutical quality control has remained its main application area. Several other uses are well known but they have not been practically implemented due to the high cost, long time response, or size of commercial polarimeters. There are about 12 worldwide major manufacturers of polarimeters all of them offering the same solution. In all cases, the polarimeter is made up of two polarizers (the second being the analyzer). Without the sample, the two polarizers are orthogonally aligned minimizing output light’s intensity. With the optically active sample, the analyzer is rotated to recover the intensity minimum. The rotation of the analyzer allows determining the concentration of the optically active substance. This technology suffers from several disadvantages as the analyzer must be mounted in a rotating gear which is the limiting element for accuracy, resolution, time response, cost, and size. STEM Photonics, in collaboration with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, presents a disruptive technological approach to polarimetry based on the conical refraction phenomenon. An optical effect that transforms an input light beam into a ring of light. At any point of the ring, the light is linearly polarized so that every two diametrically opposite points are orthogonally polarized. Taking a single image of the ring with a CMOS camera and post-processing this image, it is possible to determine, with high accuracy, the polarization rotation produced by the optically active sample. Thus, conical refraction allows to manufacture small-size low-cost high-resolution single-shot polarimeters, providing key advantages over competitors.
